New: free downloadable applets for use with SMP Interact

By arrangement with the highly respected Freudenthal Institute at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, we have now referenced our SMP Interact key stage 3 materials to many of the ‘Wisweb’ applets that the Institute has carefully developed.

Each applet is a computer program which, by focusing on a particular mathematical concept, creates a learning environment in which pupils can discuss the ideas, gain understanding, experiment and receive feedback on their efforts.

We have produced a commentary (as an Excel workbook): the sheet called ‘Introduction’ describes how to download the applets and work with them offline; the sheet called ‘Applet comments’ describes a selection of the Freudenthal Institute’s applets and lists where they may be useful with SMP Interact in key stage 3.

Download Applets commentary (see notes below)

A separate Excel file gives (for the nine main KS3 books) chapter-by-chapter suggestions for choosing and using applets.

Download Chapter references (see notes below)

You can go direct to the Freudenthal Institute’s wisweb site from here:

Then follow the link to applets.

We are keen to add to the commentary and references in the light of teachers’ experience with them. Please email your comments on the applets and accounts of how your pupils gained from using them to office@smpmaths.org.uk
